2nd Grade

During the 1989 school year I regularly visited a second grade classroom in rural Pennsylvania, about an hour west of Philadelphia. The teacher was a good friend, and after long discussions with the principal, a short vetting process, and parents and guardians signing off, I’d spend the day with the kids whenever I could get the time.
Some weeks I would visit more than once, some months I couldn’t visit at all, and in the end I produced a yearbook zine for the students.

Over the course of the year I witnessed the crucial role my friend played in the lives of these children. An elementary school teacher helps students create a foundational relationship with knowledge. It is without a doubt one of the most important jobs there is.
