One of the things I love about photography is the people I meet enrich my life.
Joseph Di Lello has a beautiful family, and I’ve enjoyed working beside him while he records the life of Abruzzo. Who knows how long the old ways will continue. Photography like this is a process of listening and learning. Sometimes, most of the time, the camera is just an excuse.
I met Angela Porfilio leading a historical tour of Colledimezzo. Her mom always had a strong presence and when I heard Angela had a daughter I knew a three generation portrait would be incredible. Even the little one commands the frame.
Pasquale Marchionno is my father’s cousin. He lives in a care facility in Bomba and we got to visit with him outside. He has a sweet kindness that the staff seems to appreciate as they joke with him over the purchase of coffee for his guests.
He knew where my grandfather lived, just down the road from where I’m staying, and not the place he was born. It was just one story back then. I stood in front and turned to see the view. The fields may have changed, there are a few new buildings and windmills on the hill, but the mountains haven’t shifted. This is what he saw each morning as he headed out to start his day.
