300 Miles to Wounded Knee

In 2004 I was invited to photograph the annual 300-mile memorial horse ride to the site of the Wounded Knee massacre: the Oomaka Tokatakiya. Over the course of twenty years, the project grew by integrating community engagement with local youth producing stills and motion content. The project leverages social media access by posting daily images as the ride proceeds, and the community follows along with comments and reposts. The work has received multiple grants, been published in books, magazines, and newspapers worldwide, and has been included in festivals and exhibited internationally.

In 2006 I started the Future Generations Teen Photojournalism Project to supply the means for reservation youth to add their voices to the representations of the ride. Their work was daily posted on the website http://teenphotojournalism.org, and later on social media. That work can be found in the Community pages, under Teen Photojournalism.
